Choreographic research presented in Gray Box of Art Studio
In this space between theory and practice, I’ve discovered the value of solitude, the courage to trust what feels right in the moment, and the meaning of creating as a woman. Sometimes this happens in relational presence; other times, in the independence of being alone. Conversations with materials unfold through various manifestations: sound, movement, drawn and written marks, and remnants—traces of memories in my body, on paper, on canvas, on the walls, and across the studio floor. This project moves through many iterations—each with a beginning and an end—yet remains fluid, never fully fixed, except in the fleeting moments of each ‘opening event.’ I call this ongoing, non-fixed research a/semic living diaries.

This Open Studio unfolded as another iteration of dancer-audience engagement in the art space. Framed by two ongoing projects—Living Diary and Experiencing Horizontal—this experiment continued my exploration of the artist-audience relationship as a reflection of the troubled, shifting times we inhabit. It invited a sensitive relationality, affective materiality, and attention to the repetitions and patterns of art laboring, emphasizing the whole and responsive body presence in conversation. The Gray Box—this space between practice and research—held Choreographic Documentations and Installations, which represent my dissertation research. They are not finished, not a product object, not exactly a work-in-progress, and not quite a process. Instead, they are actions at rest, choreographic gestures on pause—a living, moving, diary-like continuum of performance art, an embodied “sense-ability” of relational presence.
